On 19th May this year, by busking and offering nail art services, class ECS01 was the first ever to offer two different services for Campus Care Network (CCN) Day in Temasek Polytechnic.
CCN Day is a biannual event organised by Temasek Polytechnic, where students set up booths selling goods and services to raise funds for needy students.
For CCN Day most classes set up stalls selling either a good or a service, sometimes stalls sell a good and a service. However, a stall selling two separate services has yet to been seen. This changed when ESC01 raised $219 for the needy by painting nails and busking.
ESC01 had two groups, with one manning a booth outside design concourse painting nails for customers, while, armed with a guitar and a donation tin, the busking group roamed around singing for donations. The busking team proved to be quite popular walking around the school singing popular songs and getting donations from lecturers and students, another stall even sang along with them. “Our stall has no mics and speakers, so it’s just our voices,” said Ng Le Huai, from EC01’s busking team. Painting nails on CCN Day has not been seen before, but this year, thanks to EC01’s nail art booth, anyone can get their nails done at $5, whether plainly coloured or simply designed.
Even though the idea of ECS01 splitting up as a class might seem that the class were not getting along well, Nicole Ng, a representative from the nails team, said otherwise, “We’re very bonded and it’s very easy to communicate with one another”.
When asked if it was difficult to prepare for CCN Day, Nicole said, “It wasn’t really difficult, because before today, the busking team set aside time and practiced on their own, and they organized themselves – who to bring what and what to bring. As for the nail team, those who had nail polish just brought them.” Also, according to Le Huai, they had two experienced singers on their busking team. Because their service came from their personal skill and materials they already had, they did not need to pay for any additional expenses.
Goh Jia Hui, a year one student from Product and Industrial Design, got her nails done at EC01’s booth, felt that perhaps a nail art booth similar to this would be set up in the future because it mostly appeals to females.
